It’s awesome to own a pet!
Remember though, owning a pet is a permanent responsibility and everyone in your family needs to care on a daily basis. Here are a few things to be mindful of, and to help you plan caring for your pet.

First Task

Microchip all of your pets: once/lifetime


Daily Duties
-
Take time to train your dog: daily/weekly

Play with your pet: 15-30 mins per day

Make dog walks a daily thing: at least 30 mins

Pick up dog poop: 1+ times/day

Scoop cat litter: 1+ times/day (clean entire box 1-2 times weekly to avoid bacteria buildup)

Shop for quality pet food: read the nutrition instructions carefully

Clean their food and water bowls: at least once, daily
Weekly Duties
-
Brush their teeth: 3+ times/week
-
Brush your pet: 2+ times/week

Wash their bed: 1-2 times/week

Monthly Duties
-
Refresh the toy selection: monthly or as needed

Give heartworm, flea and tick medication: monthly (check with your vet)

Clip their nails: monthly (but talk with your vet because each pet has unique needs)

Annual Duties
-
Take your pet for regular checkups: annually (every 6 months for senior pets)
-
Get your pet tested for heartworms: annually (every 6 months if you do not use heartworm prevention or miss a month)

Schedule a dental cleaning: annually

As-needed Duties
-
Clean their toys: as needed Tip: Stuffable treat toys should be cleaned with each use.
